DNA  TEST  TABLE  1

Y-Chromosome  -  DNA  Tests  (men only)

NAME DESCRIPTION  of  TEST
Y-DNA-12 12-marker Y-Chromosome test for genetic matches among males.  This test is the world standard to verify the Y-chromosome for genetic matches between males.  Results are placed in the FTDNA Y-DNA database and when 2 people show the same identical results, FTDNA will inform both parties, if they have both signed the Release Form.   You receive a certificate and a report generally describing Y-DNA sequencing and the meaning of the probability between matches.
Y-DNA-25 25-marker Y-Chromosome test for genetic matches among males.  Tests the Y chromosome for genetic matches between males.  Results are placed in the FTDNA Y-DNA database and when 2 people show the same identical or near identical results, FTDNA will inform both parties if you have both signed the FTDNA Release Form.  A perfect match of 25 markers means a lesser number of generations before a Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) can be determined.  The customer receives a Certificate & report generally describing Y-DNA sequencing and the meaning of probability between matches.
Y-DNA-37

37-marker Y-Chromosome test for genetic matches among males. tests the Y chromosome for genetic matches between males. Results are placed in our Y-DNA database and when 2 people show the same identical or near identical results, FTDNA will inform both parties if you have both signed the FTDNA Release Form.  A perfect match of 37 markers means a lesser number of generations before a Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) can be determined.  The customer receives a Certificate & report generally describing Y-DNA sequencing and the meaning of probability between matches.

Y-DNA Refine

(12  to  25)

Upgrade the Y-Chromosome test from 12 to 25-markers.   This refinement of the 12 marker Y-DNA test dramatically reduces the time (in generations) to the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA).   Y-DNA-12 to 25 adds 13 additional markers to your previous results without the need for you to provide an additional sample.  Therefore, this test can't be ordered as a stand-alone test without you having previously ordered the 12-marker Y-DNA test.

Y-DNA Refine

(12  to  37)

Upgrade the Y-Chromosome test from 12 to 37-markers.   This refinement of the 12 marker Y-DNA test dramatically reduces the time (in generations) to the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA).   Y-DNA-12 to 37 adds 25 additional markers to your previous results without the need for you to provide an additional sample.  Therefore, this test can't be ordered as a stand-alone test without you having previously ordered the 12-marker Y-DNA test.

Y-DNA Refine

(25  to  37)

Upgrade the Y-Chromosome test from 25 to 37-markers.   This refinement of the 25 marker Y-DNA test dramatically reduces the time (in generations) to the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA).   Y-DNA-25 to 37 adds 12 additional markers to your previous results without the need for you to provide an additional sample.  Therefore, this test can't be ordered as a stand-alone test without you having previously ordered the 25-marker Y-DNA test.

SNP

The Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) test is used to confirm the Haplogroup predicted by the Y-DNA test and the world-wide Haplogroup database.

Oxford Conversion Kit

This test will add the markers needed to convert the Y-DNA-10 test results from Oxford Ancestors to the FTDNA 12-marker results.  You will only need to provide FTDNA a copy of your Oxford results, and  use the kit provided to send FTDNA a new DNA sample.  Your results will be added to the FTDNA database and matched to the other people in it.  You will also be able to search the FTDNA Recent Ethnic Origins database.

Oxford Conversion Kit

This test will add the markers needed to convert the Y-DNA-10 test results from Oxford Ancestors to the FTDNA 25-marker results. You will only need to provide FTDNA a copy of your Oxford results, and  use the kit provided to send FTDNA a new DNA sample.  Your results will be added to the FTDNA database and matched to the other people in it.  You will also be able to search the FTDNA Recent Ethnic Origins database.

Ancestry Conversion Kit

The 24 or 26 markers obtained from the Ancestry.com DNA test include the 12-markers from the FTDNA basic test as well as other markers of little or no genealogical significance.  This test will supply you with the results of the 13 additional markers needed to make your results genealogically significant and included in the FTDNA database.   After you return your test kit, you will be given a login which will enable you to enter the appropriate 12 markers in the FTDNA database.  Because two of Ancestry's markers are given in the form of letters instead of DYS numbers, as soon as Ancestry publishes those numbers FTDNA will be able to include your complete 25-marker results in FTDNA database for matching purposes.  This kit is also good for converting Relative Genetics and Genetree results.

Note: All FTDNA Y-DNA genetic tests permit you to identify your ethnic and geographical origins,
both recent and far distant on your direct male descending line.
Among others, you will be able to check your Native-American or African Ancestry as well as for the Cohanim Ancestry.

DNA  TEST  TABLE  2

MITOCHONDRIA  - mt DNA  Tests  (men & womeen)

NAME DESCRIPTION  of  TEST
mtDNA

(Maternal Match)

This is the basic test for the Mitochondria DNA of females and the female lineage of males for HVR1 (16001 to 16569).   Results are placed in the mtDNA database and when 2 people show the same identical polymorphism,  FTDNA informs both parties if both have signed the FTDNA Release Form.  You receive a report generally describing mtDNA, the meaning of polymorphism, your differences from the Cambridge Reference Sequence and the meaning of probability between matches.

Ethnic and Geographic Origins - "Eve's Daughters": this test also allows you to identify your ethnic and geographic origins, both recent and far distant, on your direct maternal line.  Among other features, this test will be able to indicate your Native-American Ancestry and which of the 5 major groups that settled in the Americas you are most likely to be descended from.  Or, it will point to African Ancestry or other ethnic origins, known as the branches related to "Eve's Daughters".  Note that since FTDNA is testing only your maternal line, the results will not have input from any spouses along the way.

mtDNA

Plus

This test offers the potential to use an anthropology test as a test for female genealogy by increasing the numbers of base pairs studied to reduce the time for a MRCA.

This tests is for the mtDNA HVR1 and HVR2 of females and the female lineage of males, and also verifies possible Native-American and African ancestry.  This is the mtDNA test that includes the most number of base pairs offered anywhere: 16001 to 16569 and 00001 to 00574, for a total of 1143 base pairs.  Results are placed in the FTDNA mtDNA database and when 2 people show the same identical polymorphism, FTDNA will inform both parties if you have both signed the FTDNA Release Form.  The customer receives a report generally describing mtDNA, the meaning of polymorphism, your differences from the Cambridge Reference Sequence and the meaning of probability between matches.

Ethnic and Geographic Origins - "Eve's Daughters": this test also allows you to identify your ethnic and geographic origins, both recent and far distant, on your direct maternal line.  Among other features, this test will be able to indicate your Native-American Ancestry and which of the 5 major groups that settled in the Americas you are most likely to be descended from . Or, it will point to African Ancestry or other ethnic origins, known as the branches related to "Eve's Daughters".  Note that since FTDNA is testing only your maternal line, the results will not have input from any spouses along the way.

mtDNA

Refine

This test is available for FTDNA customers who have ordered the HVR1 only, this refinement of Maternal Match dramatically reduces the time (in generations) to the Most Recent Common Ancestor.   mtDNA Refine adds approximately 500 base pairs to your previous results without the need for you to provide an additional sample. Therefore this test can't be ordered as a stand-alone test without you having previously ordered the mtDNA test.

mtDNA

Full
Sequence

The purpose of offering a Full Mitochondria Sequence test is to:  a) More accurately establish the actual mutation rate of the female inherited mtDNA;  b) Apply statistics to more accurately predict when two people who match identically likely shared a MRCA (Most Recent Common Ancestor);  c) Provide the only (or final) mtDNA test that one will ever need to take;  d) Permit the most inquisitive  to have results that will be ‘in hand’ when more advanced scientific papers are published on mtDNA in the future.

Combined Y-Chromosome  -  mtDNA  Tests  (men only)

NAME DESCRIPTION  of  TEST
Y-DNA-12 +

mtDNA

This test is a combination of the Y-DNA 12-marker and the Maternal Match HVR1 test listed above.  The mtDNA HVR1 focuses on a portion of the mtDNA, verifying your maternal lineage as well as possible Native-American and African ancestry on that line.  You are tested for both the Y-chromosome & mtDNA of males.  This test entitles you to inclusion in both databases, certificates and reports as well as notification if FTDNA matches any genetic cousins on either side of your genome.
Because this includes the Y-DNA, this test is only for males.

Y-DNA-25 +

mtDNA

This test is a combination of the Y-DNA 25-marker and the Maternal Match test listed above.   Because this includes the Y-DNA, this test is only for males.
Y-DNA-25 +

mtDNAPlus

This test is a combination of the Y-DNA-25 and the mtDNA Plus tests mentioned above.  This test offers the highest resolution test available in the world on both paternal and maternal descent.  Because this includes the Y-DNA, this test is only for males.

Y-DNA-37 +

mtDNAPlus

(DNA Plus)

The DNA Plus test puts together the power of the Y-DNA37 and mtDNAPlus, allowing you to establish a clear picture of your direct maternal and paternal ancestry.  Because this includes the Y-DNA, this test is only for males.

Mega DNA

MegaDNA is the most comprehensive and highest resolution DNA test available in the market for genealogy purposes.  Since it includes the Y-DNA-37, this is a male only test.  It puts together the power of the Y-DNA 37 and mtDNA Full Sequence, tests allowing you to establish a clear picture of your direct paternal and maternal lines for both genealogical and deep ancestral origins.
